Clinton Lake Tournament Prep

Tournament prep for Clinton Lake is officially underway.
Located near Lawrence, Kansas, Clinton Lake is the next stop on this season’s adventure.
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass Population
This is one of the smaller lakes in Kansas — and one I’ve never fished before. That makes this the second tournament in a row where I’ll be heading to a new body of water completely blind. Unfortunately, work hasn’t allowed any practice time for this event or the last.
I had high hopes of making the three-hour drive this week to scout around the lake, but that plan hasn’t worked out yet.
According to KDWP and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Clinton Lake holds 23 species of fish. Largemouth bass dominate the bass population, though after digging a bit, I found that smallmouth are present as well.
Based on what I’ve read, a winning weight around 15 pounds seems realistic — and it’ll likely take largemouth to reach that mark.
Current surface temps show around 60°F on the Corps website, but with 100-degree highs in the forecast over the next few days, that could jump quickly.
Stay tuned for what’s shaping up to be a challenging, but exciting, event.
